A total of 27 holidaymakers on the MyTravel service complained of sickness and diarrhoea. The plane, which landed at 0500 BST, was met by doctors and consultants from Health Protection Scotland. Passengers were let away at 0630 BST after checks. Sick passengers were diagnosed with the Norovirus or so-called winter vomiting. No-one needed medical treatment. A number of the passengers had been at the same hotel where dozens of UK holiday-makers fell ill during their stay. Airport operator BAA Scotland said the quarantine measure was standard procedure.
A spokesman said: "All the passengers were kept on board for an hour and a half, and they eventually made their own way home. "In these situations, we just make sure that there is no risk to public health." The plane has since departed the airport. A MyTravel spokeswoman confirmed the affected passengers had been staying at the illness-hit Bahia Principe San Juan hotel in Punta Cana. She said: "The bug outbreak, which lasts between 12 and 48 hours, is confined to the one hotel." Some guests at the hotel have been so ill with vomiting and diarrhoea that they have had to be treated in hospital. An examination is being carried out by a hygiene expert at the hotel. |
